Designing modern

Why modern kitchens age well

A modern kitchen removes what the eye does not need: frames around doors, visible hardware, a different material every two feet. What is left reads as calm, and calm is what makes a room feel bigger than its footprint.

Designers usually pick the one material that will carry the room before anything else. A veined stone, a fluted oak island or a matte black run becomes the focal point, and every other surface is chosen to stay quiet around it.

Popular combinations

Four ways to go modern

The combinations that come up most across these kitchens. Each one filters the gallery above.

Door styles

The door style sets the tone before the color does

Two kitchens in the same finish can feel nothing alike. The door profile decides whether the room reads classic, modern or somewhere between.

  • Pull-out drawers beside wall ovens in white cabinetryShakerA flat center panel inside a simple frame. The most flexible profile: traditional with cup pulls, current with long bar handles.
  • Black slab fronts with a black faucet and veined black stone counterFlat-panel (slab)No frame at all, often without visible handles. Clean and calm, and the easiest front to wipe down.
  • Gray-stained raised-panel cabinets with a built-in microwave drawerRaised panelA contoured center panel with more shadow and detail. Suits a formal or traditional home, and pairs well with crown molding.
  • Glass-front white uppers over a white oak lowerGlass-front uppersA finishing move rather than a style. A few glass doors break up a long wall and show off what you keep inside.

Choosing your finish

Matte, grain or gloss: the three modern finishes

Modern covers a wide range. Seeing a sample in your own kitchen's light, morning and evening, matters more than any photo.

  • Matte painted

Soft and shadow-free. Black and deep charcoal are the most requested. Seen in the Rainey Street and Southern Oaks kitchens.

  • Natural grain

Walnut, rift oak or vertical-grain veneer bring warmth to a flat door. Seen in the Burnside Circle and Salt Lake City kitchens.

  • White slab

Bright and quiet, usually handleless. Pairs with any stone. Seen in the Cupid kitchen.

Before you commit

Common worries about modern kitchens, answered honestly

Most hesitation about a modern kitchen comes down to a handful of concerns. Here is what actually happens, and what to ask for.

  • “Will it feel cold?”

Only if everything is painted. Add one natural material, usually wood on the island or open shelves, and the room warms up immediately.

  • “Do handleless doors work?”

Yes, with the right mechanism. Integrated channel pulls and push-to-open hinges both work well. Ask which one the line uses and try it in the showroom.

  • “Will matte black show marks?”

Fingerprints show more on matte black than on wood. Factory-applied matte finishes with an anti-fingerprint layer make a real difference, so ask what the finish is.

  • “Will it date quickly?”

Slab doors have been in continuous use since the 1950s. What dates a kitchen is the trendy accent, so keep bold choices to lighting and stools.

  • “Is it harder to keep clean?”

Easier. No frames or profiles to collect dust, and a flat front wipes in one pass.

  • “Does modern cost more?”

The door style rarely changes the price. Frameless construction, integrated appliances and large stone slabs are what move the number.

FAQ

Modern kitchen questions

What makes a kitchen modern?

Flat-panel doors, minimal or hidden hardware, a restrained palette and long uninterrupted runs of cabinetry. Appliances are usually integrated behind matching panels.

What is the difference between modern and contemporary?

Modern refers to a specific design language with clean lines and flat surfaces. Contemporary means whatever is current, which today borrows heavily from modern but adds warmth through wood and texture.

What colors work in a modern kitchen?

Black, white, charcoal and natural wood are the core palette. One saturated accent, such as a green or navy island, reads as contemporary rather than busy.

What countertop goes with modern cabinets?

Large-format quartz or quartzite with a waterfall edge is the most requested. Dramatic veining pairs well with plain fronts; honed or matte finishes keep the look soft.

Are frameless cabinets the same as modern cabinets?

Frameless describes the box construction, which gives wider openings and a flush look. It suits modern doors, but shaker doors can also be hung on frameless boxes.

Can a modern kitchen work in an older home?

Yes. Keeping original floors, trim or windows and placing a clean modern kitchen inside them is one of the most popular approaches in our markets.
